Why Canada needs more immigrants?

One in five people in Canada is an immigrant. There are two main reasons Canada is inviting more and more new immigrants every year – the population is aging and the massive shortfalls of the skilled workforce.

Currently, there are around 17% of the population is aged 65 or over. By 2035, it will go up to 24%. The Conference Board of Canada estimates a shortfall of three million skilled workers by the end of this year, according to a Reader’s Digest report.

According to a survey by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, one out of 20 jobs remained unfilled because of a suitable candidate. This represents about 250,000 to 300,000 vacant jobs in small and medium-sized businesses alone.

The immigration system is designed to fill up those vacant positions, but one average, it takes ten years for an immigrant to get hired in jobs for which they have skills.

From 2006 to 2017, the proportion of landed immigrants’ core working age (25-54 years old) increased from 21% to 26%.

Canad has a very efficient immigration system. Since the existing point-based system was introduced in 1967, Canada continued to attract skilled immigrants from all over the world.

However, the skillsets in the host country in most cases do not match the high requirements in the Canadian labor market, so the immigrants need to undergo further training to become job-ready.

In 2019, Canada welcomed 341,190 permanent residents, while around six million visitors visa and electronic travel documents are issued every year.

Immigration is a defining feature of Candian history as the country welcomes people from all around the world to visit, study, live, and work. It makes an essential contribution to Canada’s economy and immediate to long-term social benefits.

Immigration is the central pillar of Canada’s success story, be it temporary migrant workers, students or visitors, permanent residents, protected persons or refugees, family members coming for reunification.

Canada welcomed over six million immigrants since 1990. The procedure is now upgraded and much more efficient to process the files quickly. The introduction of Express Entry in 2005 is one example.
